Azars

Inhabitants of Prade with supernatural abilities. Their gifts vary widely and must not be confused with the world's natural longevity.

Overview

An Azar is a person of Prade who possesses one or more extraordinary abilities beyond those ordinarily available to its inhabitants. Azars do not, by definition, form a kingdom, family or organization: the term describes a condition associated with their abilities.

The nature of these gifts varies greatly from one individual to another. Some possess exceptional physical abilities; others may heal, move objects with their minds or alter aspects of matter. Having a power does not by itself determine a person's character, allegiances or choices.

What Is an Azar?

Azars are people capable of feats impossible for most inhabitants of Prade. The variety of their abilities means that there is no single physical appearance or easy way to identify one at a glance. Being an Azar is defined by one's gift, not by noble title or political membership.

Nor should being an Azar be confused with goodness or justice. Powers do not determine morality: an Azar may make choices as varied as those of any other person in Prade.

Inheritance and Diversity of Gifts

Azar abilities have a hereditary component, but the specific gift that will emerge cannot be predicted with certainty. Two relatives may have very different gifts; there is no fixed list of powers that must repeat exactly from one generation to the next.

The scale and practical use of an ability also differ from person to person. Some gifts are valuable in danger, while others are useful in activities unrelated to combat. Training and experience influence how a person uses their abilities.

Known Abilities

Documented Azars provide examples of very different abilities. These references describe their gifts without revealing events from their stories:

Healing and regeneration
Yetzael can heal and regenerate physical injuries.
Telekinesis
Avelin can exert mental influence over objects.
Matter alteration
Mercyren can alter matter on a small scale.
Extraordinary physical abilities
Aderion is known for exceptional strength, endurance, speed and other abilities.

Azars and Advanced Longevity

Advanced longevity is not a power exclusive to Azars. In Prade, people can normally live between 400 and 800 years, whether they have supernatural abilities or not. Living for centuries is therefore not enough to identify someone as an Azar.

Within Marialoni's royal family, for example, Aderion possesses extraordinary abilities, while his siblings Renoyr and Lirsha are not Azars. All three share the longevity characteristic of Prade's inhabitants.

Azars and the Haadbara Organization

The Haadbara organization brings together and trains some Azars to confront the threat posed by the Eyvas. Each member's abilities can affect the roles they perform and how they work with others during a mission.

Not all Azars belong to Haadbara, however, and not everyone in the world is an Azar. Their abilities can be part of life in different kingdoms, families and groups, far beyond a single organization.

Scope and Limits of Abilities

Being an Azar does not mean being invulnerable or possessing every known ability. Each person's gifts are particular, and the advantages of a power should not be confused with having no limits. Some Azars are formidable fighters, but this does not mean all share the same military training.

The circumstances of their emergence and the ultimate origin of these abilities remain among the matters the public encyclopedia does not fully disclose.

A spoiler-free encyclopedia entry.
